JANUARY 26. 1988 'IRRIGATION IN SOUTHERN ALBERTA—PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE' by Russel Lunney. Mr. Lunney is a recognized authority on the design and application of sprinkler irrigation systems on farm fields and golf courses. He has been an active con¬ sultant to the Canadian International Development Agency in third world development (India. Pakistan, the Sudan). At present Russ is employed at UMA Engineering in Lethbridge. FEBRUARY 23, 1988 Dr. David C. Jones, Faculty of Education, University of Calgary, will speak on 'VIGNETTES OF THE EMPIRE OF DUST'. Some years ago, Dr. Jones became interested in the drive, that began in the 1920s, to consolidate the one-room country schools of Alberta. He found that the first attempts to consolidate such schools took place in the driest parts of the province. And he found that con¬ solidation was forced on the districts involved because the tax base would not support a one-room school per township. Dr. Jones' book EMPIRE OF DUST describes the sociological aspects of the 1920s drought on the (now- ghost) town of Alderson. He will tell the tragic story of the human misery, crop failure, land abandonment, and depopulation that followed. MARCH 22, 1988 Dr. Bruce Naylor. Assistant Director, Display and Public Programs, Tyrrell Museum, will speak on the recent dis¬ covery of dinosaur eggs in the Stirling/Warner area.
